The Sheridan High School Model United Nations (MUN) Team this spring competed at the University of Denver against the largest schools in Colorado. Our delegates did absolutely phenomenal, receiving four First Place and two Second Place awards. At the competition, twenty-one Sheridan students joined with 230 other high school students from the Denver Metro area (and one other team from Wyoming -- Cody) to work on key issues currently facing the international community as a whole.
Sheridan had four students receive Best Delegate awards (First Place) in Security Councils for work on the conflicts in Myanmar and the Democratic Republic of Congo. We also had two students receive Outstanding Delegate awards (Second Place) as part of the Advance Security Council (ASC) . The ASC worked on the historic Yalta Conference collaborating on the most effective resolution for war-torn Europe post 1945.
MUN is an international student organization that helps students gain skills in leadership, oratory, research, diplomacy and cooperation. The current SHS MUN team has grown from 12 during the 2012-2013 school year to 30 in the 2013-2014 year. The team has been supporting itself through fundraisers and support from the Social Studies and Activities Departments. In addition, MUN has also received community support from the Sheridan Community Education Fund, the YMCA, the United Methodist Women of First United Methodist Church, and several individuals in the community with a passion for education that provides global awareness.
