The primary teachers from Henry A. Coffeen recently attended a conference focusing on literacy. The training focused on how to incorporate authentic reading and writing choices into a literacy block that produces students who are highly engaged and who love learning!
The overall approach for engaging students and producing effective results includes attention to the components of the daily literacy block, as well as different strategies to be used within those components.
The daily literacy block, or the Daily 5, is organized into the following components:
- Read to Self
- Work on Writing
- Read to Someone
- Listen to Reading and,
- Word Work
While students are engaged in these components, teachers are able to focus on teaching reading strategies to small groups of students. Specific attention is given to Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency and Expanding Vocabulary (C.A.F.E). Primary teachers are utilizing C.A.F.E. and Daily 5 to strengthen students' literacy skills and to build stamina during independent literacy work.
