On October 30th Sheridan High School will recognize the championship football teams of the 1990s in a "Night of Champions”. The Broncs will be hosting a first-round playoff game that night so it is fitting to look back even as we look forward to more glory on the playing field.
In the 1990s SHS dominated on the gridiron. In a span of just six years the Broncs picked up five Wyoming football championships including championships in 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, and 1995 seasons. As grunge was taking over the airwaves the teen spirit in Sheridan smelled more like victory on the playing field.
SHS had been a football powerhouse in the State of Wyoming but seemed to have run dry with only two championships, 1982 & 1986, since it’s back-to-back titles in 1952 & 1953 and in 1957 & 1958. Bruce Keith, the SHS head coach at the time, had led the Broncs to the 1982 and 1986 state titles but it was his back-to-back-to-back-to-back championship titles that wrote him into the Wyoming history books and put SHS back on top in Wyoming High School football.
The old Central field, on which Broncs had played since the inception of the team in 1910, was the site of multiple victories in the 90s as the Broncs added to what now totals 23 Wyoming State championships. In 1990 the Broncs were 9-1. The only defeat that season came in a 28 to 20 loss to Cheyenne Central but the Broncs had sweet revenge when they faced Central again and won in a 35 to 30 championship victory. In 1991 and 1992 the Broncs went a combined 20 - 0 beating the Gillette Camels in two straight championship games. In just three years the Broncs racked up six victories against their archrival Camels. In 1993 the Broncs continued their championship streak by going 9 - 1 and beat Evanston in the championship. The next year proved rough for the Broncs who transitioned to new head coach Bert Dow but the Broncs soon found themselves on top again in 1995 with a 7 - 3 record and another championship when they beat Laramie for the title.
It has been over two decades since these players and coaches walked the halls of SHS with championship swagger and Bronc fans would like to see them once again. On Friday, October 30, this year’s Broncs enter the Wyoming 4A football playoffs hosting a first-round game. The 2015 Broncs are inviting any player or coach from the championship teams of the 90s to attend the game and be recognized at halftime. The Broncs of the past have shaped a legacy for today's Broncs. Let’s recognize the past as we cheer on the future and help SHS continue to lead the legacy!
