SHS Musicians earn All Northwest Honors

Outstanding music students from Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington and Wyoming have received top honors by being selected to participate in one of our 2017 NAfME All-Northwest performing groups.  The students listed below joined over one thousand other outstanding high school student musicians in this gala event. NAfME All-Northwest high school bands, orchestras and choirs met in Bellevue, Washington February 16-19. They rehearsed and performed in concert under the direction of world-renowned conductors. These All-Northwest musicians were selected from over 4600 students who auditioned to participate in this outstanding event, which is managed by the Washington Music Educators Association. Many professional musicians credit their All-Northwest experience as crucial in their decision to choose music as a career. Thousands of others whose career paths took them in different directions have great memories of participating in this inspiring and motivating musical experience and claim that it was a life changing experience for them. Well-known Northwesterners who have participated in past years’ All-Northwest groups include trumpeters Doc Severinson and Allen Vizzutti, The Seattle Post-Intelligencer’s Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist and columnist David Horsey, 2008 National Teacher of the Year Andrea Peterson, and jazz saxophonist Kenny G.

This year, ten Sheridan High School musicians were selected to participate in the event. Those students include: Brynn Bateman, Gabriel Briggs, Helen Burch, Caleb Campbell, Sidney Carroll, Thomas Clift, Heather Heath, Spencer Longhurst, and Cooper Neavill. These students were accompanied by Sheridan music department leaders Diane Knutson, Ashley Lecholat and Razmick Sarkissian.

Being selected to the All-Northwest Band, Choir, or Orchestra is one of the highest honors a high school musician from Wyoming can achieve. Once selected, students rehearsed for three days with the most talented students from our regions six states. Students work with world renowned conductors and perform a final concert. This year, the band and orchestra concert was held at Benaroya Hall in downtown Seattle. This is the same concert hall where the Seattle Symphony plays. The Treble and Mixed Choir concerts were held at the Hyatt Grand Ballroom in Bellevue, Washington. This opportunity allows many students to work together for a collective good and create beautiful music.

Congratulations to those from Sheridan that were selected.
