Reading at home is an important habit for children to have, and studies have shown that students who read independently do better on tests and have both a stronger vocabulary and core knowledge base. Reading is also habit forming; the more a person reads, the more they want to read.
In order to encourage the formation of this habit in an enjoyable way, Story School is planning a Skating Field Trip for students who reach their individual nightly reading goals during the next month. Children in grades K-2 are asked to read 20 minutes a night, while the 3rd-5th graders will have a goal of 30 minutes a night. The entire school will meet weekly as we cheer each other on, and move our paper doll skaters across the bulletin board to the goal.
Read On, Story Students!
